The South Korean men’s and women’s sport climbing speed teams won a combined bronze medal in the relay at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.
The Korean women’s speed relay team of Choi Nau (Family Mountain Company), Jeong Jeong-min (The North Face Climbing Team) and Noh Hee-joo (Family Mountain Company) clocked 26.901 seconds to beat Kazakhstan’s 27.998 seconds in the third place final of the women’s speed relay at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games at the Yangshan Climbing Centre in Kirqiao, Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, China, on Thursday.
The Korean men’s speed team of Jung Yong-joon (Daegu City Sports Council), Lee Seung-beom (Chungcheongbuk Gyeongnam Climbing) and Lee Yong-soo (Ohyeon Altitude Association) also beat Singapore in the third place final with a time of 17.827 seconds to 23.169 seconds.
The speed relay is held on a 15-metre high wall divided into two, with the first runner finishing on the left wall and pressing a button to start the second runner on the right wall, and the third starting on the left wall.
The Korean women’s team improved their chances of winning a medal by finishing second in qualifying, while the men’s team also have a chance to stand on the podium.
Sport climbing first became an Asian Games event at the 2018 Games, where Korea won one gold (Chun Jong-won, men’s), one silver (Sasol, women’s) and one bronze (Kim In-ja, women’s) at the combine.
They failed to win a medal in the speed event at the inaugural Games.
At the Hangzhou Asian Games, she also failed to win a medal in the men’s and women’s speed individual events on the third day.
However, it was a different story in the three-man relay.
The women’s team finished second in their heat in 25.151, behind China’s 21.877.
They lost to Indonesia in the quarter-finals, but won the third place match to earn a valuable bronze medal.
The men’s team qualified fifth and reached the quarter-finals, where they defeated Kazakhstan to reach the semi-finals. The men’s team also lost to Indonesia in the final, but did not miss out on a medal.
