After the LG Twins came from behind to win 7-6 against the Lotte Giants at Sajik Stadium in Busan on the 4th, the team began to change into their championship hats and uniforms with a smile on their faces.
The LG fans in the away stands waited for the team to arrive, singing their support songs at the top of their lungs.
As the players poured out onto the field one by one, LG fans began to chant “LG is invincible” after 29 years of waiting.
The team had travelled from Seoul to Busan for the game the previous day, on the 3rd, and received the news that they had clinched first place in the regular season.
They had booked their ticket to the Korean Series “on the bus” after second-placed KT Wiz and third-placed NC Dinos lost side-by-side without playing a game.
LG sought the consent of the home team Lotte and organised a ‘regular season first place ceremony’ after the game.
Lotte displayed LG’s regular season title emblem on its scoreboard, honouring the team’s first-place finish.
While LG clinched the top spot in the regular season for the first time in 29 years since 1994, Lotte has yet to finish first in the regular season since its inception.
The LG players looked out at the away fans and unfurled a banner that read, “To victory, one Twins, one fan, one result!
Some LG fans were moved to tears with emotion.
The LG players waved banners commemorating their first-place finish in the regular season, and some held up jerseys of Go Woo-seok, Moon Bo-kyung, Jung Woo-young (all competing in the Hangzhou Asian Games), Adam Plutko, and Ham Deok-ju (injured), who were unable to attend the victory ceremony.
Before the game, LG hung the jerseys of four players – Ko, Moon, Woo-young and Ham – on the dugout wall.
Plutko’s jersey was later added by a fan.
Oh Ji-hwan, who led the team as captain for one season, promised, “We will win the Korean Series and win the overall title.”
LG ended its humble first-place ceremony in Busan with a final chorus of cheers.
