Manchester United (Manchester United) are expressing confidence in their pursuit of a defender.
“The Red Devils are doing everything they can to sign Glisson Bremer (26, Juventus) in the summer transfer window,” Italian outlet Tuttosport reported on July 22.
United’s record this season has been nothing short of disappointing. After 28 games in the Premier League, they have 15 wins, two draws, and 11 losses, leaving them in sixth place with 47 points.
They’ve struggled in Europe. The Red Devils were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League Group A after a disastrous six-game campaign in which they won one game, drew one, and lost four.
A shaky defense has been one of United’s problems. Rafael Varane, Harry Maguire, and Jonny Evans have all been injured this season, and the club hasn’t been able to maintain a stable defensive unit.
The need for a new center back has become a priority for United. With the future of Baran, Evans, and Victor Lindelof unclear this summer, it’s imperative that they find a replacement to fill the void.
The Red Devils have set their sights on Bremer and are ready to pay up to €50 million for the midfielder, subject to owner Jim Ratcliffe’s approval, according to reports.
Bremer left Turin in 2022 to join Juventus. The Bianconeri paid a modest €41 million transfer fee for the player, identifying him as their next defensive core.
The move paid off. Bremer quickly integrated into the Bianconeri’s defense. He made 43 appearances across all competitions last season and quickly established himself as an integral part of the team.
His performances have continued this season. He has started 28 of Juventus’ 29 Serie A matches. Thanks to him, Juventus have conceded just 23 goals, the second fewest in the league.
United’s signing is not a sure thing. Juventus are looking for between €60 million and €70 million for Bremer.
Nevertheless, confidence is high. ‘Tuttosport’ quoted a source as saying, “United are aware that Juventus are in financial difficulties. They have a strong belief that they will be able to negotiate and get Bremer,” said Tuttosport.
