The medal ceremony for figure skating at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics was held in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, two years after it was canceled due to Kamila Valyeva’s (RUS) doping scandal.
“The top-ranked U.S. team and the second-ranked Japanese team celebrated with gold and silver medals, respectively, at Champions Park in Paris, France, in front of an estimated 13,000 spectators,” the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Sunday (local time).
The ceremony was attended by all members of the U.S. figure team, including Vincent Zhou and Karen Chen, as well as U.S. men’s singles competitor Nathan Chen, who retired after the Beijing Olympics.
Japan was represented by Shoma Uno, who announced his retirement from the men’s singles, but women’s singles ace Kaori Sakamoto and next-generation men’s singles standout Yuma Kagiyama were there.
International Ice Skating Union (ISU) President Kim Jae-Yeol, who presented the medals to both teams, congratulated them on the ISU website, saying, “What happened two years ago has finally come to an end, and I am happy that the medalists have received the congratulations they deserve.”
The United States and Japan finished second and third in the figure team competition at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games in February, but shortly after the team competition, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) postponed the team medal ceremony indefinitely and delayed the announcement of the final results of the event after the top-ranked women’s singles skater from the Russian Olympic Committee, Valeryeva, tested positive for doping.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) investigated the case for nearly two years and in January of this year suspended Valeryeva for four years. It also announced that it was stripping the Russian Olympic Committee of its gold medal in the figure team event.
In response, the ISU redistributed the figure team medals from the Beijing Games. The United States, which was second, moved up to first place, while Japan, which was third, moved up to second.
However, the ISU only awarded Valyeva zero points for the women’s single short program and free skate in the team event. The scores of the other Russian Olympic Committee athletes were included in the calculation.
As a result, the Russian Olympic Committee finished third with 54 points, one point ahead of fourth-place Canada (53 points).
Canada appealed to CAS to nullify the Russian Olympic Committee’s total score in the figure team event, but the appeal was rejected on Feb. 2.
The ISU has finalized the figure team standings for the Beijing Games following the CAS dismissal.
The Russian Olympic Committee was not present at the medal ceremony as a disciplinary measure following its invasion of Ukraine. 사설 토토사이트
