Another female boxer facing gender controversy has reached the finals, this time from Chinese Taipei (TAIWAN).
Lin Yuting won a 5-0 (30-27 30-27 30-27 30-27 30-27 30-27) decision over Esra Karman of Tunisia in the semifinals of the women’s 57-kilogram boxing event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris, France, on Monday (June 8).
Lin Yuting, who has been plagued by a “gender controversy” throughout the Games alongside Imane Khalif (Algeria), who qualified for the women’s 66-kilogram final the day before, is one win away from gold.
“It’s been a tough journey,” Lin said after the fight, “and I will use everything I’ve learned to do my best in the final. I’m just grateful to myself for making it this far.”
Lin Yuting used her long reach to keep her distance from Karman, who tried to attack from close range.
According to AFP, Reuters, and others, Karman made an “X” sign with his fingers after Lin Yuting was declared the winner.
He did not explain the meaning of the gesture.
Earlier, Svetlana Kamenova Staneva, who lost to Lin Yuting in the quarterfinals, crossed her index fingers to form an “X” after the match and refused to answer questions from reporters about the meaning of the gesture.
The International Boxing Association (IBA) disqualified Khalif and Lin Yuting from last year’s world championships, claiming they had “XY chromosomes,” sparking controversy over the two fighters.
It’s not clear what chromosomes they actually have, nor is it known what physical measurements make them “more male than female.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC), which expelled the IBA from the Olympics for financial corruption, match-fixing, and biased judging, will directly oversee boxing events starting with the Tokyo 2020 Games.
The IOC found the IBA’s testing of Khalif and Lin Yuting to be extremely flawed and allowed them to compete in Paris.
